Wine & Walking Day 5: Ball’s Falls

We started our day at Honsberger Winery where we had a delicious brunch. I was unfamiliar with this winery but booked brunch there because it was close to the hotel and looked promising. It exceeded all expectations as the food was excellent and the wines were also very delicious.

Next we made our way to Ball’s Falls. We were happy to be able to walk around without our heavy packs on this day. Even though we get used to them, it’s still nice to have more mobility, particularly in areas that are steep or rocky. That said, actually getting to Ball’s Falls was, as usual, the hardest part of the hike! We took a gravel road that was difficult to walk on and had absolutely zero shade, but once we got to the Bruce Trail, things began to improve. We entered via Glen Road and made our way along the Bruce Trail to the Twenty Valley Trail and through the Ball’s Falls Historic Village.

We arrived at the Lower Falls first and then made our way to the Upper Falls.

Next we made our way to Calamus winery where we again were greeted with live music being played outdoors. The winery had a relaxed vibe that was perfect for a Sunday afternoon.

After a refreshing glass of rose, we got an Uber back to the hotel and prepared for our second visit to Restaurant Pearl Morissette, a fundraising event for Gillian’s Place, a women’s safety and support shelter.

The event started at 5pm outdoors behind the restaurant. There were amazing canapes, wines, cocktails and my personal favourite, ice cream pops. We went for a tour of the restaurant farm and heard about the ingredients they grow on site and the growing methods they use. The weather was gorgeous so it was a perfect day for such an event.

The dinner menu was incredible, and it was amazing to get to try food made by the chefs from 20 Victoria and Famiglia Baldassarre: restaurants in Toronto we’ve been wanting to try but haven’t yet.

After dinner, festivities resumed outside and it sounded like they might go late, according to the chef from 20 Victoria who we were able to chat with for a few moments. Unfortunately while it would have been nice to party at the farm, it was getting dark and if we didn’t want to have to call an Uber, we’d have to walk back to our hotel while we could still see. We also had to move on to our next location in the morning, so a late night just wasn’t in the cards. We did have some time, though, to roam the property one last time before heading back.

A very different experience at Pearl Morissette on this occasion than last, but one that will be just as memorable.
