Rails to Trails Day 3 – Ancaster

With Day 3 being just as hot as Day 2, we again had to change our plan of walking the whole distance from Hamilton to Ancaster. Instead, we planned to take an Uber to our accommodations in Ancaster, drop off our bags, and go for a day-hike. We got to The Barracks Inn several hours before check-in but the front-desk staff allowed us to drop off our bags so that we didn’t have to carry them with us while we explored the surrounding area. Our first order of business was to find food, which we did at Caniche bakery. We shared 2 sandwiches and some lemonade and then it was back out on the trails!

Our first destination was Canterbury Falls. As we approached the falls we noticed a large mound of animal “waste” and our first thought was that it looked like bear poop but thought there was no way it could be. Jon Google Lens’d it and confirmed it was black bear, and at this point I was ready to bail on the rest of the walk. Jon assured me there was little chance that we would actually see a bear since they want to avoid us as much as we want to avoid them and while I continued on, I was nervous the entire time.

We continued on, looking for Sherman Falls but we got lost and ended up on a trail that was not forested and was extremely sunny and hot. All in all it was not the most enjoyable walk so luckily it wasn’t too long!

We got picked up from an entry to the Bruce Trail and made our way to Fairweather Brewing Company. We like Fairweather’s beers and were excited to try some at the brewery.

The beers were delicious and the brewery itself is very cute and definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!

Near Fairweather Brewing Company there is an entry to the Rail Trail that we would be taking to the rest of our destinations so we followed it to Old Ancaster Road where we could get off the trail and visit another brewery in Dundas: Shawn & Ed’s.

We had a Salted Lime Cerveza that was refreshing after a 3km walk in 40 degree plus heat. Afterward we took an Uber back to our hotel, got cleaned up and went for dinner at Cavallo Nero, an Italian restaurant near the hotel. We ordered calamari, burrata, trout and truffle sacchetti. Everything was delicious and exceeded all expectations.

After dinner we went for a walk around Ancaster and found some more trails that contained public art works which was unexpected and fun.

Following our walk we ended the evening at Coach and Lantern pub where a trivia night was in progress. We like listening in on trivia nights without the pressure of actually playing, and it was a fun way to end our night.

The next day we would be moving on to Copetown to stay in a converted church for two nights!
