Rails to Trails Day 5 – Copetown

Copetown is a small rural community of only about 130 residents and is mostly farmland, however there was enough nearby that we had plenty to do during our full day there. The Rail Trail has several entrances very close to the Airbnb we stayed in, so we were happy about that as we could explore part of it on Day 5 and another part the next day as we made our way toward Brantford. The part we did on Day 5 was Summit Station to Old Highway 99 where we went to Flamborough Hills golf course for lunch.

I found this Blue Jay feather on our walk and considered it to be a good sign for our baseball team!

After lunch we walked back the same way we came and stopped at Summit Station Dairy where we had ice cream and bought some fresh cheese curds (made that day!) as well as a frozen pizza for dinner back at the Airbnb. We also heard a Hermit Thrush on our return walk, which is a rare bird for us to have heard in that location at that time, according to the Merlin app.

We watched part of the Blue Jays game on TV and then went outside to enjoy a campfire that was made for us by our hosts Karen and Ed. Ed came out to chat with us to explain how to maintain the fire, and noticed we were listening to the Jays game on Jon’s phone. He mentioned that he had a large group of relatives coming to visit from Holland in July and they would be attending a game. Jon informed Ed that he was also Dutch and they had a conversation about where their families were from. Ed also told us the story of the evolution of the property the Airbnb sits on, which is now covered in trees and gardens but was completely bare when they first acquired it. It was all very interesting and we were glad to get a chance to talk to Ed (and Karen who joined us when she heard the chatter!) They were very gracious hosts, providing us with groceries and baked goods, and opening their home to us. We would highly recommend staying at their property if you are ever in the Hamilton area!

We turned in fairly early since the next morning we would be heading out around 9am and actually walking to our next destination of Brantford. The heat had finally abated and we felt more comfortable about carrying our bags long distances and were excited to get back on the trail!
