Rails to Trails Day 10 – Cambridge

This would be the final full day of our trip and we would be going out with a bang at Langdon Hall. We lucked out with timing in that a BBQ was scheduled to take place on Monday, June 30, the final day of our adventure. The tickets were released after our initial booking and we were able to snag a spot at the popular event. But there was still so much for us to do before the BBQ, including taking a walk around the expansive property on which Langdon Hall sits. But first things first… breakfast!

Breakfast was included in the package for the Grand Tasting and we made it just in time for the final seating. I’m not typically a breakfast person, but there was no way I was missing this. I ordered a baked Honeycrisp apple stuffed with oatmeal and it was a work of art. Jon’s bacon and eggs also looked tasty but not as pretty, so no photo.

After breakfast we walked around the property, including some of the surrounding hiking trails.

As we approached the lawn of Langdon Hall after our hike we saw some not-so-wild life. We must have stared at the frog for 10 minutes. It didn’t move much but was fascinating nonetheless.

It started to rain a bit so we decided to go inside and have a snack at Wilk’s pub. We took a seat at the bar and had a glass of wine and a basket of bread and crudite.

After our snack the rain subsided for a while and we intended to play croquet (we had learned the rules while waiting out the rain at Wilk’s) but when we got to the croquet lawn the setup didn’t look like what we had learned about so we bailed on that idea and played bocce ball instead. I was quite proud of my play and was winning by quite a few points but it started raining again so we had to cut the game short.

We waited out the rain on the back porch of the Cloister building with some wine. A dove who had built it’s nest on the porch was hanging out with us as well.

It was now almost time for the BBQ so I took some time to freshen up while Jon went to the pool for a quick dip. I had wanted to hang out and have cocktails by the pool earlier, but the rain put a damper on that plan. I guess we will just have to return sometime so I can live out my poolside dream!

The BBQ was originally supposed to have been outdoors but they set up the BBQ stations under cover and the tables were in an indoor meeting area instead. It didn’t have any negative effect as it was still possible to spend time outside when it wasn’t raining.

Indoors we were seated at Table 16 which is our lucky number since our birthdays are both on the 16th of the month! As per usual we found a way to watch the Blue Jays game (and hopefully didn’t disturb anyone in the process!)

The setup of the BBQ was great as there were grilling stations with each chef preparing their own dish. In the centre were soups and salads to eat with the grilled items. Inside there was a huge dessert spread. There was so much food and we left very satisfied. It was a very fun way to end our time at Langdon Hall and our trip overall!
